It's the start of another new year and we're all in new classes. Some classmates have changed and some remains the same but I'm sure you'll all make new friends. The Student Council would like to wecome the fresh new AMKsians and we look forward to knowing you better at the Sec 1 Orientation Camp 2007 from 17 Jan to 19 Jan.

So what are your new year resolutions?

Dear teachers and students,

We commemorate ASEAN Day on 8 August. The Association of Southeast Asia Nation, or ASEAN, was established 39 years ago on this very day in 1967, with just five founding members. It started with the modest objectives of promoting peace, stability and economic growth; and to foster collaboration among the member countries.

Since its establishment, ASEAN has expanded to include 10 Southeast Asia countries: namely Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2003, the ASEAN Leaders pledged to work towards an open, dynamic and resilient ASEAN Community, consisting of the three pillars of political and security cooperation, economic cooperation, and socio-cultural cooperation. To put it simply, the ASEAN Security Community is about Peace, the ASEAN Economic Community is about Prosperity, and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community is about People.

Some of you may be wondering: "What does ASEAN really do?" and "How does ASEAN affect me?" The policies and cooperation of ASEAN do in fact have a significant impact on our daily lives. First, ASEAN provides an environment of peace and regional stability. Singapore’s involvement in ASEAN is to help create a regional family and identity. It is a wide platform through which you, the youth of ASEAN, can grow, learn, work and play.

ASEAN countries have worked together to establish a Free Trade Area comprising more than 500 million people and with trades worth over USD 700 billion per year. This single market enhances ASEAN's competitiveness and attractiveness to investors from around the world. ASEAN’s economic integration is important in improving our standards of living, increasing the amount of regional trade, creating more jobs, and making it easier for people to travel within the region.

Another example of ASEAN’s work is in keeping her people safe and healthy. To deal with the SARS crisis in 2003 and the ongoing Avian Flu threat, no country can effectively tackle these outbreaks of diseases alone. ASEAN countries need to work together to implement measures to contain the spread of these diseases and allow our people to continue to live and work in safety.

Beyond our region, ASEAN is also an important vehicle for Singapore to work with important partners such as China, India, Japan, Korea, Australia, the US, the EU, and Latin America.

The theme for this year's ASEAN Day is "ASEAN and Young People". As students in Singapore, you have the opportunity to tap into the growing networks amongst students, educators and researchers in ASEAN countries today. In particular, within the field of education, Singapore currently holds the Chairmanship of the ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting, as well as the Presidency of the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Council. Through these fora, we have created various platforms for the youths of ASEAN to get together and interact.

These include student exchange programmes with various ASEAN members, school twinning between our schools and schools from our neighbours, as well as joint student camps, and sports or cultural activities. For instance, many of you would have noticed the participation, or even interacted with fellow musical groups from the region at the recent Singapore Youth Festival, or participated in the camps that we had with our ASEAN friends. These are useful opportunities for you to achieve a deeper understanding of the cultures and languages of our neighbours and to appreciate the rich heritage and diversity in the region.

I therefore strongly encourage all of you to take advantage of such opportunities. You may want to check out the ASEAN Film Festival and workshops at Golden Village Cinemas from 7-13 August. You can also play your part in our country’s efforts to build an ASEAN Community by sharing your own experiences and our Singapore culture with your peers from other ASEAN countries.

I wish everyone a happy and meaningful ASEAN Day.

8 Days Scenic Korea (11 June to 18 June 2006)

Day 1 Singapore – Incheon

Waiting for the plane at Changi Airport. Yeah! We’re going to Korea!!!

Day 2 Incheon – Yongin – Jeju Island

We’re at Yongin Everland, an outdoor theme park with thrilling rides and lively entertainment.This is the place where the Korean drama ‘Red Bean Lady’ was filmed.

Day 3 Jeju Island

Yongduam Rock or Dragon Head Rock is one of Jeju Island’s most unusual lava formations. It looks like a roaring dragon rising from the sea into the sky, hence its name.

Yongduam is a volcanic rock that was created from an eruption about two million years ago. It is 10 m high, and 30 m long. It is named so because of the legend that a dragon (“yong”) living in his dragon palace tried to ascend to the heavens and got stuck. Because the shape of the rock resembles the shape of the dragon’s head, it is called Yongduam. The rock now has only its body parts, because during a heavy storm a while ago, the head part of the rock was hit with lightening and fell off. About 200 meters to the east of Yongduam is Yongyeon (Dragon’s pond). Again, the pond is so named because it was said that the dragon used to play there. The water is so clean you can see the bottom of the pond.

Sangumburi Crater

Mrs Ong is really cool! 6 months pregnant and in slippers, she climbed up the steps without a drop of sweat! Kudos to her!

Songsan Sunrise Peak

A stone peak great for watching sunrises. If you watched “Princess Lulu”, a Korean drama, a scene was filmed here.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption about 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a hill with grass that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge is good for walks and for horse riding as well.
The sunrise from the crater is magnificent. Also the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak between the bright yellow colored rapeseed flowers in the spring is a sight that must be seen.

Jeju Folk Village
A folk and history museum with miniature displays of traditional villages. Watched the Korean drama ‘Da Chang Jin’? Some parts of it was filmed here.

Jungmun Daepo Coast
Jusangjeolli Cliff

One of the most famous locations on All In is the Lotte Hotel, renowned as the best hotel in Korea for romantic scenery and exotic atmosphere. You can enjoy the beautiful Jeju scenery overlooking the Pacific and the romantic atmosphere of a Dutch windmill on a lakeside cliff. The windmill shows up frequently in important scenes in the drama.

Mysterious Road
On Mysterious Road, we experienced the phenomenon of going uphill when our vehicle’s engine is turned off!!! Amazing!!!

Day 4 Jeju Island – Pusan – Daegu

Dodamsambong The scenery is really nice here!

Eight areas designated as the most beautiful sceneries in Danyang, are Haseonam, Jungseonam, Sangseonam, Sainam, Gudambong, Oksunbong, Dodamsambong, and Seokmun. These areas were visited many times by numerous scholars during the Joseon Period (1392-1910), and contains many historically and culturally important relics. There are Giamgwiseok (fantastic rocks) on Mt. Sobaeksan, Mt. Geumsusan, and Mt. Doraksan and clear water flows through numerous falls in the valleys. The most famous of the eight is Dodamsambong Peak. Three Rocks create a large “S” figure as it stands tall in the middle of Namhangang River. This is the only place in the world where you can see such three longest rocks protrude in the middle of a river. The following legend still lievs through this day; among the three rocks, the big rock is called Nampyeonbong, Janggunbong the rock on the right side is called Cheobong (or Adeulbong), and the rock on the left is called Cheopbong (or Ddalbong). According to the legend there lived a couple who loved each other, but had no child. They found a mistress because they wanted to have a baby, but once she had the baby, she began to mistreat and taunt the wife. The heavens saw them, and turned all of them into stones. The way the rocks stand next to one another is very interesting.

Day 5 Daegu – Mt Sorak

Again, we did a lot of climbing here. We sat on the cable car for some parts of it though.

We tried our hands at making Kimchi and we also got to wear the Korean traditional costume called Hanbok.
It was really fun!

Lotte World

Lotte World is Korea’s largest indoor theme park. Do you recognize the carousel behind us? Yes! This is the filming site of ‘Stairway to Heaven’!!!

We took a picture with the famous Korean national soccer player who also plays for Manchester United – Park Ji Sung!!!

Day 8 Seoul – Incheon – Singapore

Reporting to School Late on Monday 10 July

The Student Council had put forward the idea of reporting to school late on 10 July to the School Management Committee. The meeting between the Student Council and School Management Committee had reached a win-win situation whereby the school had granted AMKsians the permission to report to school at 8am sharp straight to the classroom. To give way to this change, there will be no morning assembly as well as class interaction time.

We, the AMKsians, should follow the conditions given to us by reaching school on time and not being late. We should also concentrate fully in class and not doze off because the aim of this appeal is to provide AMKsians with a better learning mood and a refreshing mind to study.

The Student Council thank all AMKsians for your support in this appeal. Your suggestions will be heard and put into consideration by the Student Council, so continue to give us your support in the future. We will voice out your opinions to the school in the best possible way.

COME ON and join in the closely-bonded group of girls called the GIRL GUIDES! As a uniform group, we train girls to be TOUGH yet knowledgeable in all areas of life. Like all uniform groups, we perform footdrills but what make us so special? We are the only all-girls uniform group in our school, so Guides have learnt how to open up and speak up (since we are all girls). Some had proven to have overcame their problem and fear of speaking in front of a large crowd because of GIRL GUIDES!

As parents of teenagers, you should be an integral part of your children's lives. At the same time this desire to be involved in your children's lives must be balanced with allowing your children the space to exercise in dependent thought and action and become self-reliant in the process. If parents intervene too strongly or regularly to solve school problems fortheir children, they could be robbing them of an opportunity to learn lifeskills they will need to succeed in school and beyond. When your childcomes to you with a problem they face in school, you could share with themhow they could solve the problem and encourage them to handle it on theirown. For instance, if the problem involves another classmate, you could use your experience to guide your child to solve the problem responsibly and encourage him or her to do so without first seeking help from the teacher.You could ask your child to approach a teacher to resolve the matter if itpersists or worsens. Similarly, a child could be encouraged to first seek clarification directly from a teacher without any parental intervention.This may not be easy for your child but your encouragement will give your child courage and make it easier. We encourage our students to speak up and speak their mind respectfully and we are most willing to listen to them.Parents can call up the teacher or bring the matter to the attention of the Vice Principal/Principal if it remains outstanding.It is through participating in problem resolution that children leave school with both academic skills and life skills like self-reliance,sharing and conflict resolution etc.

Hey AMKSians!! Here are some exam tips, hope this helps!!

Advantages
-Exams value your memories and your skills and ability to understand what you are studying. They make you prepare before hand and, if they are unseen, they make you cover a lot of topics as you do not know the questions. They also force you to be specific and focused, as time is limited in most exams.
-Examinations test a student's knowledge and understanding of a particular subject. They bring questions from an entire module together in a challenging environment.

Attitude
-It is wise to remember that exams are not there as punishment. Instead, they are a good way of testing to see how much information you have learnt. We all hate exams, but we have to realise that we cannot run away from them as there is always another one waiting around the corner
-Examinations are not really something to fear because, usually, if you attend to revising your subject you should not have to much of a problem when you get into the exam.

Avoiding Stress
-Although examinations can be stressful, there are ways to avoid stress. Revision before hand is very helpful, as is group discussion. In the exam it helps to make a good plan, including points, because should you fail to finish in time, the plan and points can gain you some marks. Always go for the question you are sure of. We dread exams and get really nervous and anxious. Many thoughts rush through our minds and we fear that our minds will go blank in the exam room and we will forget everything we have revised. Three main points to remember in alleviating exam stress, are preparation, relaxation, and confidence.

Relaxation
-Allow yourself time for relaxation and thinking
-Use strategies like deep breathing to overcome panic
-Visualise yourself in positive and relaxing situations

During Your Revision
"Observe the time of day you work best". "I think the best time for study is first thing in the morning before I have washed or had breakfast". "I would not study after 9.30pm". Stop work every hour for a break. Get up, walk around, have a cup of something

Where to revise
-Find the most productive place to work
-Identify your space for intensive study and work there
-Work wherever you can concentrate
-The night before the exam have a good sleep.
-Have a good meal before the exam.
-Prepare everything the night before. Wear comfortable clothing. Gentle exercise might relax you.

During the Examinations
-Calm Down
-Do not panic
-Relax
-Read the instructions on the exam paper
-Read the questions carefully. It is quite common for questions to make no sense the first time a panicky student reads them. Relax. Read them carefully again.
-Identify the questions you think you will answer
-Use the time given sensibly.
-Read each question carefully and remain focused on it throughout your answer.
-Structure your answer paying attention to the exact wording of the question.
-If you run out of time on a question it is usually best to go on to the next question.
-If you have left a question unfinished you may be able to find the time to come back to it.

A final thought
!!!Remember that exams are not the be all and end all - they are just one aspect of your student life!!!

Friends!! They are people we love, trust, have fun together, and of course, we can't live without them. Who would want to have no friends at all??? So, we have a special day for Friends and that's the International Friendship Day!! It's a special day to recognise our friends and their contributions to our lives. Also, friendship is very important as it brings peace and harmony to the world. A great reason to celebrate isn't it?
Friends may come in different shapes and sizes, age and genders, but they are still people that are imposrtant in your life. Since Friendship Day occurs only annually, make the most of it! Let your friends know that you care for them, and that they are truly appreciated. Here are 5 tips to celebrate Friendship Day and show your friends they are special:
1) Buy small presents for them like chocolates and sweets
2) Write them cards to tell them how important your friendship is
3) Dedicate songs to your friends
4) Plan group outings

Flag raising ceremony

An AMKsian has expressed his/her thought that the school should keep the school community informed of both competition victories as well as defeats.The AMKsian mentioned very well that we should consider announcing defeats in the flag raising ceremony because AMKsians have a right to know what is going in the school and that we should learn to handle failures as they are part of learning. While these are good reasons to include news on defeats in the morning flag-raising, we need to balance against it with the need to keep our flag-raising ceremony short.

I would like to invite AMKsians to contribute their ideas on how we can acknowledge and recognise the efforts of AMKsians when they suffer defeats against other teams using the flag-raising ceremony and other means.

NOMAD- Travelling

In the school's effort to promote the aesthetics of the pupils, NOMAD 2005 was produced. With the school acting as the stage and the theme of this year's NOMAD named 'travelling', AMKsians received this performance with great zeal and anticipation. With the performance being held on the 29th and 30th of july, the build-up to the performance begun early in the year. With different levels of pupils being assigned to different tasks like designing of tickets or press releases, everyone tackled these tasks tactfully. Rehearsals soon followed after the mid-year exams and there was a clear indication that everyone had put in a lot of effort in every bit of the rehearsals.
The first day of the performance was muchly anticipated by all the performers. Coming to school early to put on make-ups, nervousness was the word to describe most of the performer's feelings then. The visitors soon found themselves touring in a maze of wondrous visual artworks, taking their stride in Slippers and Sleepers, checking into the Terminal, playing along to the tune of Vignette of a Violin as they embarked on a suitcase journey. They also got an opportunity to try their hands at the Guns amd Tanks obstacle course, and reminisce over the Tsunami. Finally, The Fugitives at the Bus-Stop was presented in an exciting and humorous way. They also drown their cares in coffee and tea at the three Cafes, and enjoy pieces by our budding musicians in the background.
The two magical nights of performance was though tiring for the students, but it was a great success evident from the radiant faces of the audiences. With oppotunies like this NOMAD performance for the AMKsians to display their high level of aesthetics, we here in AMK believe that we can see the school developing into a high-achieving neighbourhood school but also a school with a very high level of aesthetics.
